Before and After: Mini Rocking Chair

My first ever Facebook Marketplace purchase - a total success. I bought this adorable little rocking chair for poor little Owen who has no toys anywhere and hardly gets a lick of attention {Opposite day}. Since Owen thinks he's a big boy who can hold his own bottle and thinks he can do a better job at spooning in the rice cereal, I thought I'd make it a big boy chair. He loves to watch {snooze through} hocky games with his dad, so this is his very own "shark tank" rocking chair. {free rally shirt from last season} {iron-on vinyl, thanks to my bro for discovering} Okay, we may be a little topsy-turvey still, but in a coupla months, he'll have it down pat.

Dresser Entertainment Center

I received some questions about my "entertainment center". I have no idea why these seem to be so expensive, and often, so ugly. I had the hardest time finding something I liked, so I just used a dresser. I bought this dresser for $35 at a garage sale a few years back{thanks Clare!} and painted it with paint+water so you can see some of the woodgrain through it. I did do the whole hinges in the drawers thing, only to find that our electronics didn't fit in the drawers. So, I ditched the drawers and bought MDF, covered them with Fabric and used them as shelves. In retrospect, the hinged drawers would have annoyed me, and I would have always ...

Before and After: Cane Chairs

I didn't think I could show my face until I had finished them. Why did it take so long? A combination of a four-month-old who just beat colic, and this chair not being the easiest to reupholster. But check out these beauties... I'm in love! Hilarious how so many of us have these chairs. One reader had already redone her chair. Let me start by saying that this is not a project for the faint of heart. It did take some muscle and some patience, but look how cute! Totally worth it. Also note that I'm not a pro. Not even a semi-pro. I've only done mild upholstery jobs, so I just made this up as I went along, and it ...

Patio Wish List

I live in an itty-bitty condo, and this is my patio: I don't have anything on my patio currently except for ongoing projects. I'd love to have some furniture out there now that the warm weather is upon us, but I don't want to spend the money on it right now. Well, it doesn't hurt to do a little looking. The baby gets a little cranky in the early evening, and we walk to the neighbor's patio and swing on their hammock. He LOVES it. Some kind of swing is a must. I love those padded patio swings, even though they are *fug*, and would be willing to get one because they are so comfy. Here's a cute one I found on ...

My Boring Kitchen

Do you have a boring kitchen too? My kitchen is pretty, the appliances are nice, the finishes are new, but it's just not me. I've always struggled with it because the style of the kitchen is a contemporary that I don't particularly like. There are a million things I could do about a kitchen that doesn't feel like me, but I don't want to sink my money into it. Then I remembered my spoons. I collected spoons growing up, and even after I was done with this collecting phase, my siblings would still buy me spoons so my collection was ever-growing. With a few frames and paper from the craft store, a backsplash tile from the hardware store, and some new hardware ...

Glass Jars

I always reuse things I've collected for parties - sometimes to use at another party, sometimes to use in my home. I was able to do both with these. I used these jars at a baby shower I threw: And put them on the shelves in my bedroom: Remember: Don't buy these if you don't have to! Clean out your fridge, eat more pasta, or see if someone is giving them away on craigslist or a garage sale .

Dresser Before and After

...And you thought I'd be bored on my Maternity Leave... This dresser was a wedding present from my mom, and we've had it for over 7 years. I love this dresser. I even loved it white but it was getting pretty dirty after so many moves. Here are the highlights: The dresser was almost raw wood so dusting and very little sanding was needed I had four of those little knobs left over from another project, so I decided to save a little money and use these knobs instead of purchasing a whole new set. I was able to purchase the remaining knobs at Home Depot. Paint color was Elegant Silk Interior Satin Latex Valspar Paint from Lowes. This was my first time using ...

Pretty Closet

Were there more important things to do today? Probably. {1 12" square scrapbook paper, cut in half, and double stick tape per drawer. I've had some of these scrap pieces of paper for over two years, and now they are living out their dreams hiding my art supplies and tools.}

Decorating Cables

I'm at the point where I'm deep cleaning every room in my home {and you thought I'd be bored on maternity leave...}. Call it "nesting" or call it "we've been so busy with life and work that our house turned into a pig sty," but I am getting to the bottom of it. I LOVE this. There are just some instances where we can't hide that cord, and I love this fix, especially for the office. Thanks Jim! {found on Gizmodo}

My Favorite Nook: Brooklyn Limestone Feature

My husband weeps as he reads about my favorite nook on Brooklyn Limestone; he refers to it as the death of his reading nook. It's true, he set up this little narrow space with a chair and a shelf of books when we first moved in, and I greedily moved the chair to the living room where we needed extra seating and moved the books to the bedroom, where my husband reads every night. Since then I have been called a nook-killer and worse. But alas, we must move on {seriously honey, get over it}, and my favorite nook in my house has been shared on Brooklyn Limestone.

Rocking Chair Before and After

This is the rocker my mom used with all of her seven children; it is over 40 years old. She offered it to me and my husband when we found out we were pregnant {although me and several siblings have been diligently hinting at it for years}. I scored at Joann Fabrics to recover it for $3/yard. My mom recovered the cushions complete with zippers and her custom piping {she's "passionate about piping!"} and she added some scrap batting to make them more durable. My hubby sanded and stained it with gel stain, sealed it with varnish, and now it's good as new! It's tiny and perfect for the size of the room... and I had very little hand in the ...

Making a Vinyl Tablecloth

The last time my mom went to Portland, she came back with some cute vinyl to make a wipeable tablecloth. While I was in Portland for the holiday, I did the same. This is Moda laminated cotton {I have a hard time finding moda fabrics online to show you, but here are some equally adorable laminated fabrics - Amy Butler even has some now!}. {oh, and you don't have to go to Portland, they just happen to have a fabulous fabric store and NO SALES TAX.} The only limitation with this is the width of the fabric. You probably wouldn't want to piece the fabric together because you'd get a pretty heavy seam, but both my mom and I added a thick ...

Glidden Paint Review: A Success

I was approached recently to do a paint review for Glidden. I do a lot of painting and have used several brands, but this was my first attempt at using Glidden paint: it passed the test. It was a good excuse for a much needed project. After hanging my T-shirt art, it became ever apparent that the my stark white master bathroom needed to be painted.  I used Glidden's interior satin in Haystack and it was a painter's dream: I only needed ONE COAT! Since we are the first owners of the condo we live in, all of the walls hadn't been painted, and I found out the hard way, that most of the walls hadn't even been primed. I learned ...

Immortalized T-Shirt

I cut up my t-shirt and framed it. It was a cozy t-shirt and I loved the print, but was a tad short {and more like a straight jacket now that I'm "with child"}. Now I can see it everyday instead of hiding it in a closet. Oh, and hey, freed up another hanger for a new shirt. Win - win. {It has become BLARINGLY apparent that I need to paint my master bathroom now that this white art is hanging.} I have also immortalized t-shirts in the past... from little league to college volleyball - all the t-shirts I couldn't part with have become the most COMFY cozy quilt.

Angel Chandelier

This is my West Elm Chandelier that I like to decorate for the holidays. This year, I used my new angel wing tree decorations from Pier 1 tied with Whitney's Divine Twine {you need to buy this stuff, you can use it for EVERYTHING}. I decorated with bats for Halloween, and tree branches for Christmas last year.
