Carseat Canopy
Necessity is the mother of a trip to the fabric store and a one-hour sewing project.
{btw: 1 hour sewing project + a newborn = 3 day sewing project}

I needed a canopy for these occasions:
- Baby was 2 weeks old but I had to get out of the house – this helped me feel a little better about having a barrier between him and the world of germs
- It’s raining
- It’s chilly and a blanket or other traditional canopy would have blown off in the wind
- He’s asleep when we enter a restaurant and I want him to get a little more sleep
- It’s bright outside
I’m not selling these, and I didn’t make a pattern. I’m testing the waters to see if improvements can be made, but so far he likes it! Also, they are both the same dimensions, but I added a little extra velcro in case different car seat brands fit a bit differently.

They say that moms are the best innovators. You hit the jackpot on this one Brooke. You should take that idea all the way to the bank! I’d love to have one of these in the car when the sun is beating down on my son’s face.
Just discovered your blog through Bower Power and I’m loving it! I love your sewing creations, so beautiful and your fabric is fabulous :) Can’t wait to read more
this is GENIUS. Genius! And yes, all projects nearly double in time (at least) with baby.
So smart {and cute}. I’m sure you COULD sell these!
Nice work! I see these in Utah all the time, but they don’t have the elastic at the bottom. Thought about buying one, but they are kind of pricey (sp?) like $30-$50…seriously. It probably only cost you $10 to make it, huh? Love it!
Umm, get these on an etsy right away. You just created your million dollar invention. :)
I had a similar one of these with Weston and I loved it!
Adorable! Almost reason enough to have a baby!
I’m coveting…teach me how?! :) I want, I want.
Brooke,
I can’t believe these haven’t been mass marketed yet. It’s brilliant. Get on that or sick Shelley on it.
@Megan – I’ll hook you up.
@Lane – Hell no. I hereby give Lane Hunter rights to license and mass produce…I’m too pooped to think about it.
This is a great idea! I had one of those tight fitting car seat covers for Sy,but the flap would never stay up and it scared me to have something so close to his face. Super cute too!
Awesome! I actually AM selling a version of these- but more of a tent where it goes all the way in back (because of wind) and doesn’t have elastic in front. Love these! So far I’m just on facebook (such devoted sisters) but soon to be on etsy when I get home in a few days!
Once you’ve perfected it, I hope you’ll share the instructions! It’s a great idea!
I would so buy one!
i am BEGGING you to post a pattern – i love those and want to make one of my own!!
PLEASE!! :)
I LOVE this idea! The elastic is genius for wind, and the half size would allow me to afford a cuter (more expensive) fabric. I’m going to attempt to make my own but highly doubt it will look ANYWHERE near as cute as yours! Thanks for posting the inspiration!
Um, I have been searching for a carseat canopy that is NOT the tent kind – just one side. I LOVE yours, and wondered if – even if you can’t give me a pattern, maybe you could email me some basics of what you did? Pretty Please?
@Tenille – Thanks for your comment! I don’t have a pattern. I basically cut out a shape that would cover the carseat, made it double-sided with a fun pattern on the inside for the baby to look at. The bottom of the cover has a little ‘tunnel’ sewn in to string the elastic through. Then two straps at the top sewn in between the two cover fabrics. Wish I could help more. Now that I have more time, I could probably work up a pattern for it. Also, I found a great one made by JJ Cole with similar qualities: http://jjcolecollections.com/car-seat-canopy
