How Do Whales Sleep?

This crossed my mind the other day as I struggled to get a good night’s rest at 8 1/2 months pregnant. Or even a nap. I bet whales don’t have to prop their legs up on stacks of pillows, but tossing and turning might be as turbulent nonetheless. I feel like a whale.

I even bought some ugly comfy shoes when I realized I had become “the girl who wears crocs in public” {gasp}. When I wake up in the morning, my feet KILL. I can’t even walk to the kitchen without putting shoes on because the weight, gravity, and water-retention have become too much to bear on my little pigs. I have all elbows and knees swirling around in my belly.

And to top it off, no love from Craigslist!

Two unbelievable deals on that white Eames knockoff chair I want so badly, and neither contact emailed me back. Guess I’ll get back to my laundry, washing dishes, and vacuuming for the billionth time and daydream about what could have been.

man, you’re getting so close! i would say something reassuring like “sleep will come after the baby gets here!” but from what I hear that’s nowhere near the truth. hang in there! :)

Hang in there! You’re getting so close. Sorry your feet have been bothering you. I had carpal tunnel so bad towards the end of both of my pregnancies. I could barely lift my wrist in the air and it would hurt. I couldn’t even talk on the phone or blow dry my hair.

I saw this article on Apartment Therapy this morning so when I saw your craigslist comment, I thought I’d share:

I love your nursery! Hope you find some relief as the days get closer!

The swelling and aching will go away..the lack of sleep no…but atleast you’re body will come back. Everyone’s saying it…but hang in there! I can’t wait to meet baby!!

…not sure that’s the best whale picture to put up, but I do understand what you are saying.

i’m sorry to hear about your feet problems. my poor feet grew a half shoe size longer – not to mention that i can no longer comfortably wear skinny shoes – over the course of my three pregnancies due to all of the loosening that goes on. not only did my hips spread, but so did my feet. battle scars. better than stretch marks? you tell me. i have still not decided on that.

one thing i’ll tell you about getting a good night’s sleep when you’re at this point in the game, is that if you actually DO get that good night’s sleep, it’s likely that your body was saying, “woman, it’s a good thing i forced you to sleep just now, because we’re about to go into labor!” i hope that doesn’t freak you out.

the reason i think that way is because the night before i had all three of my kids, i slept so stinkin’ soundly. of course, i have friends who say this didn’t happen to them at all.

I don’t mean to be crass, but is the whale in the picture sleeping or dead?

7. Amelia

Oh bless your heart. I hope your husband is being super-sweet to you. He did this to you…I’m sure you’ve reminded him of that! ;)

Hate to get hung-up on this, but that whale picture is horrific. Look at the blood on its back… its a dead, beached whale. So so sad… Maybe you can replace with something better: http://tinyurl.com/ydmr75w

Whales don’t sleep on beaches; it’s dead. That’s pretty awful to post and I’m hoping you’ll reconsider your choice of photos.

Yes, getting close and am going to revel in the good nights sleep I do get!

… Didn’t mean to offend anyone with the picture. I’ve replaced with a more friendly whale. Sorry!

How about a little distraction with a visit to some super cute sites like http://www.henryroad.com and http://www.afrochicshop.com... like a chilly orange sherbet on a super hot day- or so I’m hoping :-) Can’t wait to meet my nephew!

At least you don’t have fifth graders asking you if you’re pregnant when you are NOT.

I was listening to This American Life (I think) one time and the sleep expert being interviewed said marine mammals are able to rest each hemisphere of their brain separately. That way they are half asleep/half alert…which is pretty much how I feel on a daily basis! ha! My sister-in-law had swollen feet with her first and she said it is surprising how quickly it goes down after delivery. Hang in there.

i’m 6 1/2 months pregnant and i can relate with the lack of sleep.. i have recently found the oddest position i feel comfortable in.. i sleep horizontally rather that vertically.. which is doable since i’m short.. but my head is on half of my hubby’s pillow and back up against the headboard… wierd but i like it..
i can still nap thank god.. but only on the couch..

just remember its all worth it in the end.

Several years ago I found an eams era wooden lounge chair at a garage sale for a dollar, and had no idea what I had come across until recently. We actually threw it away because we couldn’t afford to redo the cushions…not very ‘green’ I know, but we didn’t think it would be cool to drop off a ‘useless’ chair at the local thrift store thinking they would never be able to sell it. To add insult to injury, the very same chair is listed on e-bay for $500. Doh!

I’m sure the end of pregnancy is as completely miserable as possible so we want the baby out. you’re so close! it is the best thing to suddenly have a waist again (welll, sudden may not be the best word, but to eventually have a waist again) and a sweet new person.

btw, I never saw the original pic, but this one is nice and the title had me laughing

I’m lovin your blog and have been clicking around your past posts all day :) Thanks for the inspiration :)

haha oh man… i personally loved the dead whale photo, although it was a little disturbing at first and sad that you were comparing your inability to sleep to a dead whale? Are these the normal thoughts of an about to pop pregnant lady? It was funny, and nice to see your sense of humor come out!

I’m sure it’s hard to find photos with sleeping whales! When do those guys snooze anyway?
