Pant Alteration Tutorial
Preggo pants. *sigh*
I’d love to have some cute ones but I don’t want to spend the money on pants that I’ll wear for less than a year.
My friend gave me these Junior “Jolt” brand jeans that were comfortable, but made me look like a moose {especially paired with a tent-like top}.
So. I. Fixed. Them. I had nothing to lose.
Here’s the before:

Step 1
Put the pants on inside-out. Sit on the ground and take a pen to mark the inside of the leg you want to trim down. You can do anything… boot leg, straight leg, skinny, etc. It was easier to do this sitting down with legs stretched out, rather than standing up. These jeans had cute button pockets that I didn’t want to mess with, which is why I chose the inseam to trim.

Step 2
SEW! Be sure to reinforce the seam in the crotch {ugly word, I know}. My stitching didn’t go all the way to the end of the pantleg, I left the bell shape at the bottom.

Step 3
Trim the excess fabric and flip right side out.
Here’s the result:

And in honor of the great fashionista Maegan…

I am sitting here dying of laughter! You crack me up with your Maegan pose.
I couldn’t help but notice your sewing machine, it’s nice. Do you like it? I am in the market for a new one and can’t decide.
Have a great weekend! Sunshine and smiles.
@bink & boo – ha! It was hard to get my leg up! :)
I LOVE my sewing machine. It’s a Shark, and has lots of great features… Here’s a link to the machine and some reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Intelli-Sew-Computerized-Sewing-Machine/dp/B0002TUVN0
All of my friends and family who have used it, LOVE it. Good luck!
Oh my gosh, can you be ANY cuter pregnant????
And I’m loving your fashion poses. Tyra would be sooo impressed. Hey…they should do a Americas Next Top Pregnant Model….you would so win. So totally!
Absolutely brilliant! Did you use any special thread/needle for the denim?
@elisecreates – The denim on these pants feel more like regular cotton… very thin. You have a good point – if you were working on heavy denim, you should definitely use a denim needle for your machine, but I thing regular thread would be fine.
What a great idea. I have some jeans that could use some altering to look slimmer. I’m not pregnant, but if I keep hitting the Halloween candy I’ll look like I am!
Whitney
PS Nice poses.
Yep…regular thread works fine. Note: If you are not tall like Brooke (but short like me) and have to shorten those pants too, match the top stitching thread (some are orange or gold) when you hem the bottom and no one will know you didn’t buy them just that length.
You look so AMAZING Brookie! Seriously! “Pregnancy Pants” and all!
PS-You couldn’t look less like a moose, darling….
How cute you are! But, honestly, I hardly think you looked anywhere near moose-like at all!!!
I think I must do this to some of my jeans that are too loose now. Thanks for the inspiration!
P.S. Please tell me you’ll do a tour of your home soon (or that I didn’t already miss one you did in the past before I discovered your blog). I can see some majorly stylish background in all of these pictures!
@Susan – Yes, yes… I’ve been wanting to do a house tour. I’m going to try to do that this weekend actually… I’ve been a busy cleaning and organizing bee, and it’s time for some new photos. Thanks for the nudge! Coming soon!
Thanks for not revealing the name of your larger friend… looks like I’m not getting my pants back! :) They look cute!
@Shannon – lol. If you want them back, you will LOVE them. The “sagging” problem you were talking about… FIXED! They’ll be all ready for you!
your poses are cracking me up. watch out! oh, and can I jump on the bandwagon and nudge you for a house tour as well? :)
