Dear Mom, I’m Sorry We Made Fun Of You…
Week after week, my most important chore was to dust the trophies and the books on the shelves in the living room. This was no simple feat! Seven children, each with some fourteen trophies or so {maybe more from the more -ahem- atheletic of the bunch}. The Encyclopedia Brittanica lining the bottom shelf {the reading of which was threatened punishment should any of us squeel “I’m bored!”}, and rows and rows of endless books. Dutifully, I took each book off the shelf one by one, dusted it and replaced it, all the while making snide remarks about how you had so delicately organized your books not by name or topic, but by color. Should I need to do a book report on paintings, I wouldn’t move toward the non-fiction section of your personal library, but instead the area somewhere near hex color #F0d855. It didn’t seam logical to me or any of your other witty children, but today I’m having Oprah’s trademarked “AHA! Moment”. Please accept my sincere apologies for this blatent disregard for your artistic notion, and please enjoy this gallery I have put together JUST for you. Happy early Mother’s Day…

Great collection of photos – I’ve been debating doing this in our own house but I’m afraid we don’t have colorful enough books. Maybe it’s time to raid a book sale or thrift store to make it happen – love the look.
@whitney – going to a thrift store might not be a bad idea if you need to bulk up on books. Check out the smaller scale version of this on the cover of Readymade magazine this month: http://www.readymade.com/images/issues/AprilMay09Cover.jpg
For sure,I got tons of kidding over my book arrangement, but I never changed it! It was just more asthetically pleasing. Who knows…maybe that subtle message led to such artistic kids! Thanks for the tribute and apology(wink.) You add beauty & fun wherever you are and to everything you touch! Love you, MOM.
punishment? that’s really funny. i used to read the encyclopedia just for my own enjoyment when i was a kid. but we just had the world book. i could only dream of britannica! :) my four siblings, however, did not share my passion.
i like the “books arranged by color” idea. i think you are lucky to have such a creative mom.
I love the room with the pug, but all those perfectly colored books make me wonder… do you think they really read them or bought them for their hue?
@John – We DEFINITELY had the World Book too… but didn’t know if that was too obscure for people to remember. Guess Not!
@Jess LC – You’re probably right, some of these people “fudged” their collection to get all the colors. But I’m here to tell you that my mom’s collection was BONAFIDE. She didn’t have any fakes, and she had lotsa colors.
OHH! I LOVE these photos! What a lovely way to display books!
